My Flyer:

Reflection:
While catering to the appeal of incoming students (audience), I figured a flyer (genre) would be very effective. I chose a flyer because they can be hung up just about anywhere and they are easy to read quickly. My purpose in making this flyer was to hopefully get new students to join athletic teams at the university (purpose); by doing so, I am gaining new talent and excitement to the athletic department (engagement). In order to capture the attention of the students I used big, bold, red font for the title (contrast). I then kept the red color for one of the main colors on my flyer, which included primarily red and blue (repetition). I also made sure to keep the text boxes lined up, as well as the pictures, to keep an attractive sight (alignment). Finally I made sure that the information in the boxes were relevant to the titles and separate from each other (proximity).

I like this flyer because the big picture grabs your attention right away. It is also filled with dark, relaxing colors, suggesting that it will be a relaxing experience to watch the movie.

The red lettering create a nice contrast with the black background to show what is the most important of the message. I also find this poster to be pretty funny, making it effective in relaying the message.

The bright and vibrant colors on this poster definitely caught my attention. I think this poster is effective because it has clear pictures and big, visible writing.

My Brochure:

Reflection:
To send the message to parents and family (audience), I chose to make a brochure (genre). The brochure tries to lessen the worries of parents that are torn with the idea of their kids pursuing sports in college (purpose). By doing this, I am hoping to gain their trust, ensuring the participation of their child in his or her sport (engagement). I used calm colors (contrast) to try and create a soothing effect. I also used the same orange and blue pattern throughout the brochure and continuously used the rectangle boxes to create structure (repetition). Keeping most things lined up as best as I could (alignment), I grouped the most informative details under the same heading and made a separate heading for an interview that I conducted (proximity). I added the interview, hoping it would be effective to hear from someone who is actually going through the situation.

I felt that this brochure was very bland and boring. Even though it has good alignment and repetition, it lacks the contrast that would grab my attention or catch my eye. I definitely wanted to make sure my brochure was more exciting than this one.

The style of this brochure is a bit different. It is folded into 4 sections instead of 3, thus allowing room for more information to be shared. I also liked their use of pictures throughout the brochure. I found this to be very appealing and made me want to read more. One last thing about the brochure was that a lot of it was red, which really makes it stand out and demands your attention.

Everything about this brochure is appealing. The various blues make for a soothing read. The repetition of headings in blue, as well as the alignment, also make it very easy to read and find information. This seems to be very effective when trying to get across the message within the brochure.

My Satire:

Reflection:
For my satire, I decided a poster/ad (genre) would work best. In this satire, I tried to use bright colored and vivid pictures (contrast) to catch the readers eye. The poster is supposed to be showing the stereotype of college athletes (and coaches) paying off their tutors to do their work for them in order to stay eligible (purpose). I tried to arrange the picture in an order that looked like it was telling a story (proximity). For me, this was funny to make (engagement) because many people feel that this is what happens at a lot of big universities.

The bright orange color of the poster makes it stand out right away. It is also aligned very well. One thing that I think that is wrong with the poster is that the message isn't quite clear enough. Honestly I don't really understand how the top part and the bottom part have anything to do with each other.

The big, white letters on the black background help to create a very nice contrast. There are also more colors on the inside picture to keep it from looking too dry. I also like that the message is extremely clear.

Though it could use more contrast, I think the poster is still effective, because I knew who it was about the moment I saw it. I find the poster to be funny, creating an effective way to get the message across. All of the words are also centered, which makes them easy to read.
